Kagame, AU Officials Discuss Strengthening Africa’s Health Systems and Medicines Agency
President Paul Kagame, who also serves as the African Union’s (AU) Special Envoy for Health Financing and Investment, on Friday received Ambassador Amma Twum-Amoah, the AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development, together with Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, the Director-General of the African Medicines Agency (AMA).
Their discussions centered on accelerating the operationalization of the AMA and advancing efforts to strengthen Africa’s health systems and regulatory capacity.
The African Medicines Agency, headquartered in Kigali, Rwanda, was established to enhance the quality, safety, and accessibility of medicines across the continent. It also aims to harmonize national regulatory frameworks and build the capacity of African states to ensure the effective oversight of medical products.
President Kagame reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to supporting health initiatives across Africa, emphasizing the importance of domestic health financing as a foundation for sustainable healthcare systems. He noted that African countries must invest more of their own resources in health to achieve long-term independence and resilience.
The meeting, held at Village Urugwiro, underscored the shared determination between Rwanda and the African Union to deepen collaboration in health governance, public health security, and human development across the continent.
