Mozambican Military Delegation Strengthens Defence Cooperation with Rwanda

Kigali,— A high-level Mozambican delegation led by Maj. Gen. Chume reaffirmed Mozambique’s strong security partnership with Rwanda during an official visit to Kigali.

Maj. Gen. Chume commended the joint military efforts of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Rwanda National Police, and Mozambican security forces in restoring peace and stability in Cabo Delgado Province. These operations, launched in July 2021 at the request of the Mozambican Government, enabled thousands of displaced civilians to return home and resume their socio-economic activities.

“Our countries face the common challenge of terrorism, and we must work together to overcome it,” Maj. Gen. Chume stated.

Beyond counter-terrorism operations, Rwanda and Mozambique continue to collaborate in broader military areas, including training, intelligence sharing, and civilian protection initiatives. Maj. Gen. Chume praised Rwanda for its role not only in combatting insurgency but also in supporting community development projects.

During their visit, the Mozambican delegation — which included Chief of the Mozambican Armed Forces Maj. Gen. André Rafael Mahunguane and Inspector General of Police CP Fabião Pedro Nhancololo — held discussions with Rwanda’s Minister of Defence, Hon. Juvenal Marizamunda, and RDF Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga. The talks focused on regional security dynamics and Rwanda’s growing role in promoting peace and stability across Africa.

The delegation also paid homage to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and toured the Campaign Against Genocide Museum to learn about Rwanda’s liberation struggle.

Maj. Gen. Chume emphasized that the visit marked a step forward in consolidating bilateral defence cooperation and safeguarding shared achievements in peace and security for the benefit of both nations.
