KIGALI – Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has cautioned citizens to remain vigilant when seeking banking services, following the arrest of a fraud ring that has been targeting unsuspecting clients at commercial banks.
The group, made up of Nkurunziza John (alias Shumbusho Sumaile), Dushimiyimana Emmanuel (alias Christian), and Gatongore Issa, allegedly posed as helpers to trick victims into fake currency exchange deals.
According to investigators, the suspects approached clients who appeared unfamiliar with banking procedures, convincing them to join in “profitable” forex transactions. They would show bundles of papers disguised as U.S. dollars, with only a few genuine notes on top, before luring victims to hand over money.
RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry confirmed that the suspects are repeat offenders. Gatongore and Dushimiyimana were jailed in 2018 for five years on similar charges, while Nkurunziza received a suspended sentence in 2024.
Dr. Murangira urged anyone who has been defrauded to report to RIB stations, especially Rwezamenyo, and warned bank clients to be cautious of strangers offering unsolicited assistance.
