Rwandans in Congo Brazzaville Celebrate Umuganura with Cultural Festivities and Reflection
Dressed in traditional Rwandan attire, Rwandans living in the Republic of Congo, led by Rwanda’s Ambassador Parfait Busabizwa, gathered at the Rwandan Embassy in Brazzaville to celebrate the annual Umuganura Day — a cultural event that marks Rwanda’s harvest festival and symbolizes unity and self-reliance.
The celebration began with a live virtual broadcast of a global panel discussion organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MINAFFET) and the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE). Themed “Umuganura: A Source of Unity and Foundation for Self-Reliance,” the talk brought together Rwandans in the diaspora and featured distinguished speakers.
Among the keynote speakers were:
- Ambassador Sheikh Abdul Karim Harerimana, Rwanda’s Ambassador to Indonesia,
- Ambassador Robert Masozera, Chairperson of Rwanda’s Cultural Council,
- Mr. Virgile Rwanyagatare, Director General for Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania at MINAFFET, and
- Mrs. Sandrine Maziyateke Uwimbabazi, Head of the Diaspora Affairs Department at MINAFFET.
Ambassador Harerimana shared the historical background of Umuganura, explaining that it has long been a sacred ceremony in Rwanda — a time for celebrating national harvests, presenting achievements to the king, and fostering unity and reconciliation among citizens.
Chantal Umuhoza, a representative from the Cultural Council, introduced a new digital platform designed to promote Rwandan culture. She explained that the platform helps Rwandans abroad and friends of Rwanda learn about key traditions like Umuganura — both in their pre-colonial and post-colonial contexts.
In his remarks, Ambassador Masozera thanked participants from around the world for attending and wished everyone a happy Umuganura. He emphasized that the day is an opportunity to reflect on Rwanda’s journey, express gratitude, and preserve its cultural heritage.
Among the Rwandans who shared remarks was Antoine Ngabo Ndagijimana, who praised Rwanda’s progress and the sense of national unity. He also appreciated the government’s ongoing support to Rwandans abroad.
Following the discussion, Ambassador Busabizwa commended the strong turnout and reminded attendees that Umuganura is not only a celebration but a moment to look ahead with purpose. The event concluded with a symbolic milk-sharing ceremony for children, followed by communal festivities and celebration.
