Drunk Youth Arrested for Attacking Parents and Destroying Banana Plants in Northern Rwanda
A young man from Ruyumbu, in Rwanda’s Northern Province, has been arrested after allegedly assaulting his parents and destroying 25 banana plants while intoxicated.
Neighbors say the suspect is known for heavy drinking, especially consuming locally brewed alcohol, and is also suspected of using marijuana. Nyiramana Béata, a local resident, told reporters:
“We have seen this young man drunk many times, often behaving badly towards his family and neighbors. We have tried to advise him to change, but he refuses. This is a bad example for the youth, who should avoid alcohol and drugs because they destroy families and harm those who use them.”
According to security officials, the incident happened after the suspect became drunk in Ruyumbu. Upon returning home, he allegedly attacked his parents, forced them outside, and went into the family’s farm where he cut down 25 banana plants. Residents and the village community patrol team apprehended him and handed him over to Nkotsi Police Station.
Northern Province Police Spokesperson, IP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, confirmed the arrest, noting that preliminary evidence shows excessive alcohol consumption was the main cause of the violent behavior.
“It is true — this young man committed these shameful acts after an argument with his parents. Excessive drinking is one of the main causes of domestic violence and community unrest. We call on the youth and all citizens to avoid alcohol and drugs as they lead to conflicts, insecurity, and the destruction of a better future,” Ngirabakunzi said.
The suspect is currently in police custody at Nkotsi Police Station.
Under Article 177 of Rwanda’s penal code (Law Nº 68/2018 of 30/08/2018), anyone who deliberately destroys crops on another person’s land faces imprisonment of six months to two years and/or a fine ranging from RWF 500,000 to RWF 1,000,000.
