Rwanda Recognized for Global Leadership in Women’s Representation

United Nations Development Programme has applauded Rwanda for becoming the world’s leading country in women’s representation in Parliament.

During a governance and gender equality forum held on May 21, 2026, UNDP Resident Representative Dr. Fatmata said Rwanda’s achievements since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi demonstrate how inclusive leadership can transform governance.

She explained that women’s participation in decision-making has expanded discussions around family welfare, citizen wellbeing, and social development.

Using the example of a child receiving proper eyeglasses, Dr. Fatmata said gender analysis helps governments identify inequalities that were previously overlooked.

She concluded by saying true gender equality is reached not only when women occupy leadership positions, but when institutions themselves deliver fair and inclusive solutions for all citizens.
