Rwandan Artists to Benefit from New Concert Halls in Kigali

For years, Rwandan artists have struggled with the lack of performance venues, limiting the quality and frequency of concerts. Major shows are often held at BK Arena, Camp Kigali, or Kigali Convention Center—none of which were built specifically for music and art.

BK Arena, though modern, was designed for sports, leading to sound issues and high costs for additional stage and lighting equipment. Camp Kigali is restricted by noise reaching surrounding neighborhoods, while Kigali Convention Center primarily hosts business events.

This has made concerts expensive, with artists often forced to pay millions in equipment rentals and venue fees. According to music manager Muyoboke Alex, renting BK Arena can cost up to Rwf 40 million, discouraging many from organizing shows.

To solve this, Rwanda’s Ministry of Youth and Arts Development announced two new cultural centers: one in Busanza, built with KOICA support, and another in Kicukiro with Imbuto Foundation. Both will feature modern halls tailored for artists.

Additionally, 30 youth and arts centers are planned across the country, equipped with performance spaces, professional tools, and creative studios. Within three years, artists will finally have dedicated venues to perform affordably and frequently.
