NYANZA – One man died and another was seriously injured after an explosion occurred while they were brewing illicit alcohol, commonly known as kanyanga, in Mukingo sector, Nyanza District, on the night of October 1, 2025.
The men, aged 35 and 36, were distilling the brew when it overheated and exploded, killing one instantly and leaving the other critically injured. Police and Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) officers rushed to the scene. The injured man was taken to Gitwe Hospital, while the deceased was transported to the same facility’s morgue.
Southern Province Police Spokesperson CIP Hassan Kamanzi confirmed the incident, urging the public to avoid brewing, consuming, or selling kanyanga as it is illegal and dangerous. He also encouraged residents to report anyone involved in such activities to prevent similar tragedies.
