The Western Regional Police Commander in Kenya, Issa Mahmoud, has alleged that individuals travelling from Nairobi to attend a planned political rally in Kakamega town may be armed.
Addressing journalists ahead of the event, Mahmoud said intelligence reports indicated that some members of a group linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna could be carrying firearms. The rally is expected to take place in Amalemba, Kakamega County.
Mahmoud stated that police had not received any formal notification regarding the gathering, noting that information about the rally had primarily circulated on social media. He said organisers had not sought security clearance or requested police facilitation.
The commander emphasised that law enforcement remains prepared to support lawful public assemblies provided legal procedures are followed. He warned that police would not tolerate disorder and would deploy adequate personnel to maintain security.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions following reports that Sifuna’s “Linda Mwananchi” convoy was attacked at Kona Mbaya trading centre while en route to Kakamega. Unknown individuals reportedly hurled stones at one of the vehicles.
Senator Sifuna has said the rally will proceed as planned. Authorities say the situation remains under close monitoring.
