Rwanda’s Chief Nuclear Inspector, Dr. Fidelis Rugigana, has emphasized the importance of transparency and good governance in Africa’s growing nuclear energy ambitions.
Speaking on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, during an international conference on nuclear energy taking place in Kigali, Rugigana said many African countries are now prioritizing nuclear energy as part of their long-term energy strategies.
He explained that achieving success in the sector requires strong institutions, accountability, and citizen involvement.
“For things to work properly, there must be transparency, ownership, and accountability. This begins with good governance,” he said.
Rugigana praised Rwanda’s model of separating regulatory bodies from operational institutions, noting that it allows regulators to work independently without political pressure.
He added that citizens should be involved in nuclear energy projects from the planning stage through implementation.
